샤츠슈나이더가 지은 <절반의 인민주권> 중에 루브 골드버그(Rube Goldberg)라는 미국의 풍자만화가의 이름이 나옵니다.

"우리가, 만화가 루브 골드버그Rube Goldberg의 풍자화에 나타난 바와 같이 전 세계를 누비고 다니는 정부 기구를 갖게 되었다는 사실을 감안하면, 이 체제는 그야말로 놀라운 성취를 이룩했다. 한 세대의 저자들이 미국의 공적 문제와 관련하여 관심을 가졌던 주제는 정부 기구의 작동 불가능성이었다. 미국 정부와 정치에 관한 문헌들에서 일반적으로 나타나는 염세주의적‧패배주의적 논조와 이 정치체제의 수행 실적 사이에 존재하는 괴리보다 더 큰 것은 세계 어디에서도 발견하기 어려울 것이다."

루브 골드버그를 왜 이야기했을까 궁금해서 찾아보았더니, 그는 간단한 작업을 하는 엄청나게 복잡한 기계를 그렸다고 해요. 예컨대 담배불을 붙이거나 숟가락을 드는 그런 일 말이죠. 그래서 루브 골드버그라는 사람 이름뿐 아니라 루브 골드버그 머신이라는 말이 생겼더군요. 이 장치의 목표는 "최대의 노력으로 최소의 결과를 얻는 것", 아주 복잡한 장치인데 그 장치가 하는 일은 아주 간단한... 그런 장치를 루브 골드버그 머신이라고 한데요. 미국의 정부 기구를 그런 기계에 풍자적으로 비유한 것이라고 해석됩니다. 더 재미난 것은 루브 골드버그 머신 발명대회도 있다는군요.
위 사진을 보면, 숟가락 하나로 밥을 먹어도 되는데, 계속 내려오는 숟가락으로 바꿔가면서 밥을 뜨고 있잖아요? ㅎㅎ
