자유주의와 신자유주의

몇년 전쯤인가,

한 신문 광고에서 경제학과 교수가 신자유주의는 20이 80을 먹여 살리는 사회라고 말하는 것을 보았습니다. 당시만해도, 매우 '도발적'인 생각이라고 생각했습니다.

그런데, 데이비드 헬드의 {민주주의의 모델들} 원고를 교정하다 보니, 다음과 같은 구절이 나오네요.

"자유 시장 정치경제와 최소한의 국가 개입에 대한 존 스튜어트 밀의 주장은 후대의 ‘신자유주의’ 주장을 예견케 한다. 이런 입장에 따르면, 법체계는 시민들로 하여금 자신이 선택한 목표를 방해받지 않고 추구할 수 있도록 시민의 자유를 극대화―무엇보다 시민의 재산과 경제활동을 보호―해야 한다. 개인 자유에 대한 강력한 보호는 ‘가장 적합한 자’(가장 유능한 자)가 번성하도록 하여 결국 모두에게 이로운 수준의 정치적․경제적 자유를 보증해 준다."

저는 소망합니다. 그런 사회라도 도래하길. 그 '가장 적합한 자'가 번성해서 '모두에게 "이로운 수준의" 정치적, 경제적 자유'를 보장해 주길.

그런데, 과연 부자들에게는 그토록 수고로울 '고독한' 시간이 올까요? 그렇지 않는다면 ....^^?

{민주주의와 법의 지배} 1장에서 스티븐 홈즈는 다음과 같이 이야기합니다.

"특권 계급인 부자들은 가난한 사람들에게 의존하지 않는다는 어리석기 짝이 없는 환상에서 벗어나려면 가끔씩 자진해서 엉덩이를 맞아야 한다."
